Clovis Unified encourages parents to promote online safety

A message from CLOVIS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
This week and last, suspicious social media posts have caused disruption to schools around the country. In Clovis Unified this week we have also seen similar online posts that contained threatening language against our schools. In both of these cases, we worked with Clovis and Fresno Police Departments and our own Clovis Unified officers to identify the individuals responsible for the posts and online accounts. Any students making such threats face serious school and legal consequences, regardless of their age.
As a school district we are continuing to educate students about the risks posed by irresponsible use of the internet. I am also calling on every parent to be a part of proactive efforts to help our youth use their social media accounts in a safe and responsible way. Students also play an important role in alerting their parents and school administrators to any suspicious online behavior that they witness.
As part of this ongoing effort, we are sending home to all parents via our online flyer delivery system, some resources to help start a conversation about online safety and responsible use of social media. This information is also available on our website at www.cusd.com.
We are very thankful for the support we receive through our local law enforcement and our own Clovis Unified police, and the partnership of our parent community to promote a safe school environment.
Sincerely,
Janet Young, Ed.D.
Superintendent
